Refined Sound by the Sea: Zuma, Maldives
Ansata and d&b audiotechnik curate an audio journey for a luxury hospitality destination

Setting the Scene
Located in one of the world’s most exclusive island destinations, Zuma Maldives blends contemporary Japanese cuisine with architectural restraint and a deeply considered sense of atmosphere. At Zuma, sound is never an afterthought. It is part of the experience from the very first step.
In the Maldives, the setting introduces a unique layer of complexity. Constant exposure to salt air and humidity, demands an audio system that delivers not only refined sound, but long-term durability. The brief went beyond background music. The objective was to shape a guest’s sensory journey, from arrival through to dining.
The Challenge
Designing sound for a luxury restaurant by the sea required careful system design:
- Consistent, intelligible full-range sound across dining and circulation areas
- Audio levels that support conversation
- Sea-water-resistant loudspeakers suited to coastal exposure
- A system that blends into natural materials and high-end finishes
- A gradual, intentional build-up of atmosphere from entrance to main dining areas
The challenge was not simply coverage, but progression, ensuring that sound gently introduces guests to the Zuma experience rather than confronting them with it.

The Solution
Ansata designed an audio system built entirely around d&b audiotechnik’s Sea Water Resistant (SWR) solutions, chosen specifically for performance consistency and longevity in coastal environments.
The guest experience begins at the bamboo-lined entrance, where loudspeakers are discreetly integrated into architectural frills and natural textures. Here, d&b 5S SWR loudspeakers operate at restrained levels, offering a subtle sonic cue that signals arrival. As guests move deeper into the space, the system is carefully zoned so that sound progressively increases in presence, guiding them seamlessly into the heart of the restaurant.
Throughout the dining areas, the system mostly consisting of 5S SWR loudspeakers provide even, intelligible coverage with a natural tonal balance that feels calm and refined. To add low-frequency warmth and fullness, d&b Bi8 subwoofers are paired with the system. Together, they deliver a full-range sound that remains controlled and comfortable, perfectly aligned with a premium dining environment while supporting conversation.
Power and processing are handled by d&b 10D amplifiers, ensuring precise DSP control and reliable operation. In washroom areas, d&b 4S WR loudspeakers maintain tonal consistency, ensuring that the audio experience remains uniform throughout the venue.
The exclusive use of SWR-treated loudspeakers ensures long-term protection against corrosion, preserving both performance and appearance in a salt-rich environment.
The Result
At Zuma Maldives, sound is curated to be experienced as a journey. From the bamboo entrance to the main dining areas, audio gently draws guests into the atmosphere, supporting conversation, cuisine, and design.
The result is a hospitality sound system that feels intuitive and refined, demonstrating how premium audio design can shape mood, flow, and experience, especially in environments where nature, architecture, and luxury intersect.
