Transforming Futala Lake: A Landmark Audio-Visual Reinvention
Setting the Scene
Futala Lake, a cherished heritage landmark in Nagpur, has long been known for its serene waters and cultural significance. Recently, this historic site took a bold step into the future with the introduction of a Fountain Show enhanced by projection mapping and a world-class sound design. What was once a calm lakeside has now become an immersive audio-visual canvas.
Vision and Collaboration
This transformation began with a visionary partnership between Studio One, led by the acclaimed Alphonse Roy, and the celebrated Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty. Their goal was to create an experience that elevated Futala’s heritage while delivering a show par with international standards.
To bring this vision to life, they turned to Ansata for a dependable, high-impact audio solution capable of delivering clarity and consistency across a large outdoor environment exposed to changing weather conditions.
Establishing Objectives
The project demanded:
- A sound system that could carry detailed music and narration to a 500 meter wide space catering to an audience of 2000 at a time.
- Weather-resilience to operate through heat, humidity, and monsoons.
- Uniform coverage to ensure every visitor, near or far, experienced the same sound.
- Seamless integration with large-scale projection mapping and fountain sequencing.
With these challenges in mind, the team chose a solution that balanced power with precision.
Audio System Details
- 24 x Yi10P loudspeakers (weather-resistant) – providing precise coverage and consistent clarity across the viewing area
- 12 x Bi6-SUB (weather-resistant) – delivering powerful, controlled low-frequency energy to complement the show’s musical and cinematic elements
- 2 x DS10 Audio Network Bridge – ensuring digital audio networking and reliable signal distribution
- 9 x 30D Amplifiers – powering the system with high-efficiency performance and advanced DSP tuning capabilities
Delivering the Solution
Ansata collaborated closely with Studio One and Resul Pookutty to integrate the audio system into the architectural layout of the show. Careful positioning along the lakeside ensured full coverage without disrupting sightlines or the aesthetic of the visual installation.
During final system tuning, the Y-Series proved itself as an ideal companion to the projection mapping and water choreography, offering an experience that felt emotionally rich and deeply connected to the visual storytelling.
Resul Pookutty expressed his appreciation for the system, saying:
“d&b speakers, for me, were a huge discovery and a savior of my work. There couldn’t have been any other sound but that of d&b for the light and sound show at Futala Lake, Nagpur.”
Impact and Experience
The Fountain Show stands as a flagship cultural attraction—an example of how heritage spaces can be revitalized through thoughtful technology. The combination of cinematic visuals, expressive storytelling, and pristine sound has created a destination that resonates with both locals and tourists.
Today, Futala Lake is an enduring symbol of innovation, artistry, and collaboration. The show promises to attract audiences for generations, showcasing how technology can enhance cultural heritage while preserving the soul of a landmark.
