Few venues in Bengaluru hold the cultural weight of The Humming Tree. Known for its deeply curated programming and unmistakable personality, The Humming Tree has long been a home for live music, independent artists, and the city’s most engaged audiences.
More than a performance space, it has always been a hybrid cultural room: part local watering hole & part performance venue. With vibrant art, eclectic interiors, and a calendar that has included everything from Indian and international gigs to spoken word, theatre, film screenings, workshops, and storytelling sessions, it represents a rare kind of venue built around community and craft.
Now, as The Humming Tree reopens after a long interval, the goal was to bring the room back with a sound system that matches its legacy and supports the next chapter of live performance in Bengaluru.
The Challenge
A venue like The Humming Tree demands more than loudness. Its identity is built on nuance, clarity, and the intimacy of live performance to support the thriving live music scene in the city.
The system needed to deliver:
- Concert-grade clarity for bands, vocals, and acoustic detail
- Even coverage across a close, high-energy audience area
- Tight, controlled low-frequency impact suited for modern live music
- A rider-respectful setup for diverse touring acts for plug and play
- A solution that preserves the room’s character while enhancing its capability
The reopening represented not just a technical upgrade, but a statement of intent: the venue’s sound needed to be as curated as its programming.
The Solution
Ansata designed a powerful, highly controlled d&b audiotechnik system centred around ALi90 line arrays, optimised with ArrayProcessing to ensure uniform tonal balance and consistent SPL throughout the space.
Main System: Precision and Headroom
The backbone of the system comprises:
- 4 × ALi90 per side as the main ArrayProcessed hangs
- 2 × flown Vi Subwoofers
This configuration delivers the clarity, projection, and control required for a venue that hosts everything from intimate singer-songwriter and speech-based sets, to high-energy full-band performances.
Low-Frequency Foundation
To support modern live music with depth and authority, the system includes:
- 2 × B22 Subwoofers
This combination provides both musical warmth and physical impact, while maintaining tight control in the low end.
Fills and Time Alignment
To ensure seamless coverage from front row to rear:
- 2 × 8S Loudspeakers as front fills
- 2 × 8S Loudspeakers as delays
These elements allow the room to feel consistent and immersive, regardless of position.
Ground Floor Reinforcement
- Indoor – 2 × 5S Loudspeakers
- Outdoor – 2 × 5S Loudspeakers (Weather Resistant)
Additional d&b 5S loudspeakers were deployed on the ground floor indoor areas to maintain consistent coverage beyond the main audience zone.
For the ground floor outdoor zones, d&b 5S WR (Weather Resistant) loudspeakers were selected to ensure reliable performance in Bengaluru’s varying conditions.
Mixing and Infrastructure
The venue’s live workflow is anchored by:
- Waves eMotion LV1 Classic 64, providing modern flexibility, compactness and reliability
Signal integrity is carried by:
- Van Damme cabling, ensuring reliable performance across the system infrastructure.
The Result
With its reopening, The Humming Tree returns as a beloved cultural venue and a technically world-class live music space. The new d&b audiotechnik system delivers clarity, power, and consistency that honours the venue’s legacy while enabling future growth.
